Ingeborg Kumpfmüller

Ingeborg Kumpfmüller graphisches Leitsystem für den Neubau der SOWI Innsbruck ist nur auf den ersten Blick ein angewandtes Projekt Graphikdesign. Schon bei näherer Auseinandersetzung wird klar, dass diese Arbeit den linguistischen Charakter der hier gelehrten Wissenschaften reflektiert. Kumpfmüller setzt diesen im Medium Schrift um. Schon das Logo, das über eine Spiegelung die Innenseite und die Außenseite des Hauses verbindet, ist mehr als reiner Informationsträger. Kumpfmüller reagiert subtil auf die verschiedenen Niveaus der Architektur, ihre Eingriffe sind aber dennoch immer auch als autonome typographische Arbeit erkennbar, die auf den formalen Gehalt der Schriftkunst verweisen und auf die verschiedenen Arten des Lesens. Durch diese Formalisierung gelingt ihr eine – in der kargen österreichischen Typographielandschaft der letzten Jahre – nahezu einmalige Symbiose zwischen dienender und autonomer Zeichengestaltung. Einerseits sagt das Projekt: Hier ist unser autonomer Bereich, der gesellschaftliche so definierte der Wissenschaften, andererseits signalisiert das Zeichenfeld, das Kumpfmüller im und am Haus gestaltet hat, ein Wechselspiel und in der den BetrachterInnen zugewandten Schrift entsteht Offenheit und Klarheit.

At first sight Ingeborg Kumpfmüller’s visitor orientation signage for Innsbruck University’s Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences is an applied graphic design project. On closer inspection, however, the work is seen to reflect the linguistic character of the academic disciplines taught at the Faculty. Kumpfmüller translates this into the medium of typography. Even the logo, which links the interior and exterior of the building by means of a mirror effect, is more than a mere information carrier. Kumpfmüller reacts subtly to the various levels of the architecture, but her interventions are always recognizable as typography in its own right, and refer to its formal content and to the different ways of reading. Thanks to this formalization, she achieves a virtually unique synthesis of functional and artistic design that stands out from the barren landscape of recent Austrian typography. On the one hand, the message of the project is: “This is our independent domain — that defined by society as academia. On the other, the signage that Kumpfmüller has designed for the interior and exterior of the building suggests an interplay, and addresses the viewer in a manner that creates openness and clarity.
